First impressions: Spring Lineup 2012 – Jam packed with Zombies!
So I guess this is my first legitimate article.
I’m actually a week behind on this season. I was kind of busy the past week or so, so I had held off on anime. To be honest, I was pretty unimpressed when I first saw this spring’s lineup. The winter 2011-2012 season was PACKED with tons of great shows, (a ton of which I still haven’t even started >.> ), and I don’t think I’m the only one who thinks this season is pretty lame in comparison. So for now, I’m not watching that many new titles. I’m re-watching School Rumble Ni Gakki, Gurren Lagann, and starting Nisemonogatari. Anyway, that being said, there are still two new shows that have really sparked my interest.
The first really isn’t a surprise: Kore wa Zombie desu ka? OF THE DEAD. It’s the sequel to the 12 episode anime adaptation of Kore wa Zombie desu ka? Seeing as I really enjoyed that show, and didn’t have many complaints or critiques, it’s pretty natural that I would want to watch this sequel. Now I’m not going to spoil anything, but if you haven’t seen the first season, you should probably get on that ;) .
It’s worth noting that I really hate sequels. For some reason, people feel a need to make stories go longer than they should’ve, and the sequels always fall short of my expectations and wind up being an insult to the original show. (An example I always refer to is the second season of Death Note, chock full of GAPING plot holes and very strange characters spawned out of thin air). Thus far, KZD: OF THE DEAD is doing justice to the original show that I loved. It’s got the same unique Mahou-Shoujo parodies, funny awkward romantic comedy, and nice fan service as well ^~^d; I feel like this season’s animation is really impressive, too. I also like the way the show has expanded on the harem, giving Ayumu a new waifu, and even adding more character depth to some of the girls from the first season.
TLDR: the show is just as good as the first season. If you liked the original, make sure to start watching season two. (And if you haven’t started either….. what is this I don’t even).
The only other show from this season that I have any interest in is Sankarea. I looked it up on Wikipedia when I first heard about the title, and knew I’d love it. Romantic comedy. Zombies. Now despite the fact that it shares its two major themes with KZD: OF THE DEAD, it is vastly different. Now a fair amount has happened in the first two episodes so I’m not going to spoil anything major, (or spoil anything that the first paragraph of the wiki didn’t spoil for me). The show is about an otaku kid named Furuya who’s completely obsessed with zombies, to the point where he even dreams of some day having a zombie girlfriend. He then meets this girl, Sanka Rea, who is the daughter of a rich and prestigious family.
I read an article on StumbleUpon last week that listed writing tips by Kurt Vonnegut. One of the things he said that creates a compelling story is to “Be a Sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them”. All I can say is that I’ve only seen two episodes, and I’m already making arrangements to divorce all my current waifu in order to make room for Sanka Rea. Everything about this show is… for lack of a better term *ahem* kawaii desu.
The OP is kawaii.
The ED is kawaii.
Sanka Rea is kawaii.
Man, even Furuya’s little sister is kawaii.
TLDR: The characters are really relatable, and the plot seems solid thus far. My only complaint is Furuya… for some reason he looks like a catboy.
Zombies. Romantic Comedy. Harem. Magical Girls. Vampires. Cats. Cat-like otaku. These two shows have ‘em all. Make sure you either pick up both, or add them to your backlog.
If not, youz a baka.
